・津波にのみ込まれた村 a village swallowed up [engulfed] by a tsunami.

●渦巻きはそのボートをのみ込んだ. The whirlpool sucked down the boat.

・彼の後ろ姿はすぐ人込みの中にのみ込まれてしまった. His departing figure was swallowed up by the crowd. | He disappeared into the crowd.

4 〔理解する〕 understand; grasp; take in; learn; apprehend; comprehend; catch on; latch on.

●飲み込ませる bring 《the truth》 home to sb; get sb to grasp 《the situation》; convince sb of 《the truth》

・よく飲み込んでいる have a good grasp 《of…》

・仕事を飲み込む get to understand one's work [job, business]

・情勢を飲み込む grasp developments; apprehend a situation; realize what is happening
